This is an amazing performance, I'm surprised that it's getting so little attention! This show easily holds it own with the block-buster nights a couple weeks later. The Dark Star is intense and brooding, quite like the Live Dead version from 2/27. Second set jams are superlative!

i guess it can't be said enough, but there's nothing quite like starting your day with a '69 Dark Star

Ha--CLIFF and the Doc going at it, eh? Well, okay, not really I suppose. Hmmm, must admit, though I have it, this one has not been in the rotation lately. Damn, so many to chose from. Feb shows, other than the obvious "end of the month" behemoths, usually mean the Fillmore East (11 or 12th? Shit, I forgot!...the commercial one...must be the 11th...how pathetic to have a memory lapse in my third best favorite year...getting old), or the Dream Bowl shows.

Will give it a listen.

Hope you're getting occasional use out of the hits. Do feel free to use the Yes and Beatles portions as coaster material, though you gotta balance the cup just right to be sure it only affects those two tracks.

They turn it up a notch during the late show! But Doc, how can you give these two only four stars?

"Garcia soars up into the stratosphere on the Other One, while Phil plays a counter theme to everything Jerry does. What a HOT version!! The following Cryptical is long and starts off with a mellow shuffle jam, building to a
thundering conclusion. Jerry's style and tone are just pure acid-drenched 69 to the max. If you're not on the bus by now, check your pulse!
This version of Death Don't reaches into depths of the passion and soul of the blues in ways that even Cream I dare say, could not. At over 9 minutes, they take their time. Jerry begins almost at a whisper, then proceeds to make the guitar crawl, walk and talk, sing like Aretha Franklin and just flat out WAIL!
Then Pig delivers another stellar Alligator. Listen for the China Cat theme briefly during the Jam. By track #10, they extend the Jam to include a nice Phil solo and some serious Jerry pyrotechnics. And yet there's more! The band explodes (yes, explodes!) into the Caution Jam - fast and furious as Pig and the boys lay the mojo on your brain. Jeeesuz how can they play that fast?? And the Feedback unleashes all the little sound gremlins that take you all the way to the 4th dimension. Like good sex, you'll want a cigarette after this show!! Highly recommended and a real 1969 classic."

These two have to be the best four star files archived here, but if these dont deserve five bones, nothing does...

Cliff, just curious, do you still stand by your statement, "easily holds it own with the block-buster nights a couple weeks later" in reference to the 2/7 Early set?

while pretty enjoyable, i'm loathe to put it on equal footing with say 3/1! thoughts?

Maybe just a little rhetoric?

Though I recently scored a composite of the early/late shows at 99 pts, while 2/27, 2/28 and 3/1 are always 100 pointers.

Its all relative. Still there are some 99-100 point shows I dont include in my top ten for 1969...

01/26/69 (100)
02/07/69 (99)
02/27/69 (100)
02/28/69 (100)
03/01/69 (100)
04/06/69 (100)
04/21/69 (100)
05/23/69 (99)
11/08/69 (100)
12/30/69 (100)
